Dear Friends,

The offices of The Memorial Foundation bear no resemblance to a medical facility. Yet every day, as those of us on the Foundation's staff and board strive to better the lives of people throughout Middle Tennessee by funding worthy nonprofits, we are mindful that our legacy is rooted in a tradition of healing. A tradition that began with a hospital.

This fact is both a point of pride and a reminder of purpose.

More than 40 years ago, when Memorial Hospital opened its doors in Madison, its medical professionals and volunteers began dedicating themselves to improving the health and welfare of everyone in the surrounding community. They established a tradition of healing in every sense, transforming a building into a beacon of hope and comfort for its neighbors.

When the decision was made in 1994 to sell the hospital and create a charitable fund from the proceeds, those of us on the board and staff of the newly established Memorial Foundation made three commitments: to continue to serve the people of Middle Tennessee, grow the original endowment and foster the tradition of healing.

Under the guidance of our exceptional Board of Directors, including five physicians who served as members of Memorial Hospital's board, we have honored these commitments. In 2008, The Memorial Foundation granted more than $8.4 million to nonprofit organizations throughout our region. The common denominator among these organizations is their devotion to the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of the people they serve. We are honored to support their remarkable work.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and that it helps you gain an understanding of our purpose. If you are interested in learning more about the grant application process, please feel free to review our Application Guidelines.

Thanks again for visiting.

Sincerely,

J.D. Elliott
